Description

Susquehanna Art Museum is proud to partner with artists Maureen Joyce and Carrie Breschi for I’m fine. PENNSYLVANIA, a community-engaged exhibit of ceramic masks, stories, and portraits dedicated to sculpting mental health awareness and conversations through art.

I’m fine., something we often say when we are not fine, is a project that was born out of crisis, collective voices, love, and loss. “Our world is facing a mental health crisis. As artists, we believe in the power of art to ignite change and create new perspectives. We also believe in the community as agents of positive change. It all starts with a conversation.” said Maureen Joyce and Carrie Breschi, Co-Curators of the I’m fine. project.

Initiated in 2019, Breschi and Joyce have facilitated over eighty workshops and school residencies across Pennsylvania and have curated over fifteen individual community exhibits. The I’m fine. workshops are a way for participants to express their emotions by creating the ceramic mask they wear to portray, overcome, hide, or minimize their mental health struggles. The Susquehanna Art Museum installation is the first exhibit to showcase all the masks in one space. “The masks are the thread that tie our voices together. Although every mask is unique as is every story, the message is the same. Mental health is real, and you are not alone in your struggles.” stated a York mask making participant.

A special thank you to the courageous Pennsylvania community members who were willing to articulate their mental health stories through the artistic process.

I’m fine. PENNSYLVANIA will be on view in the Susquehanna Art Museum’s Beverlee and Bill Lehr Gallery from February 10–May 19, 2024. The exhibition is supported locally by Presenting Sponsor: UPMC [Life Changing Medicine] and Season Sponsor: The Anne M. and Phillip H. Glatfelter III Foundation
