Senior VP of Financial Development

Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Senior Vice President of Financial Development will serve as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the Harrisburg Area. In partnership with the CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build the Y’s nonprofit visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Sr. VP of Financial Development also will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.

The Sr. VP of Financial Development will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to increase contributions through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, corporate and foundation support, annual support, and planned giving. This position will expand and diversify the Harrisburg Area YMCA’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the Sr. VP will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role.

As a youth-serving organization, all staff share the responsibility to keep children safe, and this position requires that the incumbent read and sign the separate “Youth Protection Policy for Personnel and Volunteers” statement and abide by it.


CORE & STRATEGIC FUNCTIONS

High-Quality Programs, Services, and Facilities

Direct and administer the total operation of the Development Department including the interpretation and execution of established policies, the development of procedures and methods, staffing, and evaluation of the effectiveness of the programs and operation.

Design and execute a comprehensive development strategy for the Harrisburg Area YMCA.

Oversee Best Practices - Association-wide Annual Campaign.

Advance major gifts program with a focus on opportunities that support healthy living and youth development.

Manage capital campaigns, engaging and overseeing capital campaign firms as necessary

Collaborate with the Senior Vice President-Operations to develop and implement the annual campaign and funding for programs that align with the Ys mission.

Create and execute Board approved comprehensive Philanthropy Plan.

Serves on the Endowment Committee and works closely with the Finance office to ensure continuity of donor intent.

Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct.  Ensure the safety and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment by keeping supplies organized, maintaining a clean facility, and caring for equipment.


Staff & Volunteer Management

Recruit, hire, supervise, and develop department staff and volunteers through use of Leadership Competency Model resources that create a culture of cause-driven leaders.

Support and partner with CEO and board members on all major fundraising activities.

Train and mentor development staff and communicate fundraising goals.

Supervises Director of Grants/Annual Campaign Director.

Provides staff leadership and/or participates on assigned committee(s) of the Board of Directors.

Identify and engage volunteers that support fundraising activities.


Finance

Works with the finance department to prepare annual department(s) budget for approval by the CEO, finance committee, and the full board.

Manage department expenses within budget.

Forecasts and budget expectations are timely and accurate.

Directs the accounting-related aspects of contributions including timely acknowledgment of gifts, recognition systems, and donor intent.


Community Development

Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community and develop positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.

Develop and maintain key long-term relationships with donors and prospects.

Reinstate the YMCA’s Prayer Breakfast.


Financial Development

Maximize Association capabilities and opportunities to further the mission of the Harrisburg Area YMCA through annual, capital, and endowment fundraising.

Directs the development, planning, and implementation of association-wide fundraising initiatives, including special events.

Coordinates support for the Association Board Annual Campaign.

Directs the research, preparation, and presentation of grant opportunities.


Operating Values

Support the branch and association objectives of the YMCA.

Strategic

Support YMCA initiatives by participating on the Executive Leadership Cabinet and facilitating strategic work groups.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in human services, nonprofit management, business, marketing or equivalent required; CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) and/or CFRM (Certified Fund Raising Manager) preferred.

Ten-plus years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization with demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).

Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing relationships over time.

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.

A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and collaboratively, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.

High energy and passion for the YMCA’s mission is essential.

YMCA Organizational Leader preferred.

Physical and mental abilities to work in a high-stress, deadline-rich environment.

Must meet Harrisburg Area YMCA driving criteria.

Experience working in a multi-unit organization.
