BBBSCR Youth and Mentors Visit Pennsylvania State Police Academy

Field Trip to Pennsylvania State Police Academy Gives
BBBSCR Youth a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Law Enforcement Careers

Harrisburg, PA (May 15, 2024) – Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) host annual field trip for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR)’s  “Bigs in Blue” youth and mentors.

On May 13th youth and law enforcement officers in BBBSCR’s “Bigs in Blue” program visited the PSP Academy to learn about law enforcement careers. PSP instructors provided a demonstration on how Troopers are trained to safely respond to calls for service, talked about the Baic Training Program for cadets and answered students’ questions about their day-to-day responsibilities.

Major Jonathon Rush, the Director of the PSP’s Office of Community Engagement comments, “The ‘Bigs in Blue’ program hosted at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy was a huge success. The smiles and laughter were infectious, and the participants enjoyed the various activities. The members of the Pennsylvania State Police enjoyed the day just as much as the children and the mentors. The members of the Pennsylvania State Police appreciate the opportunity to connect with the community and give a glimpse into our daily activities. We look forward to our next Bigs in Blue event.”

Bigs and Littles decorated their own law enforcement “Bigs in Blue” badges to take home and participated in interactive fitness activities. Attendees were then invited to view and learn about the PSP helicopter, Special Emergency Response Team, Tactical Mounted Unit, Patrol Operations and more.

“The field trip is a special opportunity for our youth and officers to strengthen their bond,” says Amanda Dunn, BBBSCR VP of Programs. “As they explore and learn about Pennsylvania State Police equipment, vehicles and work, it inspires conversation and invites understanding.”

PSP began participating in the Bigs in Blue program in 2017. Personnel of all ranks from various locations take part in the site-based program, visiting with their Littles for school lunches, recesses, and one-on-one conversations or assistance with classwork.
