Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC Holds Inaugural Local National Civics Bee Competition
HARRISBURG, PA (May 10, 2023) On Wednesday, May 3rd, the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, held the inaugural local National Civics Bee Competition for southcentral Pennsylvania.
In February, students submitted essays on various civics-related issues in their community. 16 middle-school students from throughout the region were then selected to compete in a live quiz competition, hosted by WITF’s Scott Lamar, testing various aspects of their government and civics knowledge at Harrisburg Area Community College. After two rounds of multiple-choice quiz questions, five students advanced to the final round, where they answered questions from our event judges about their previously submitted essays.
Saketh P. of Mountain View Middle School, Druthi N. of Eagle View Middle School, and Lauren L. of St. Joan of Arc School placed first, second, and third, respectively, receiving cash prizes and advancing to the statewide competition hosted by the PA Chamber of Business and Industry on Thursday, June 15.
“Recent data shows a decline in civics scores and knowledge nationally. We agree with our friends at the U.S. Chamber that “a strong economy is built on the foundation of informed citizens,” said Ryan Unger, Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC President & CEO. “We are here to work with our school, government, and business leaders to help reverse that trend and we are pleased to see so many of our students take an interest in this issue. We would like to thank everyone who participated in and supported this event. Congratulations to all the finalists and we wish the best of luck to Saketh, Druthi, and Lauren, as they advance in the competition.”
