Study Finds Harrisburg University Generates $274.5 Million Annual Economic Impact in Pennsylvania
University supports over 2,200 jobs and contributes $22 million in annual tax revenues
HARRISBURG, PA — A new economic impact study, published by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP), highlights Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s (HU) significant contributions to the Pennsylvania economy. Calling upon data from 2023, the report shows an estimated impact of $274.5 million annually with support for 2,242 jobs statewide.
The study was conducted by Parker Strategy Group, a nationally recognized research firm specializing in economic impact analysis. Using industry-standard methodologies and IMPLAN modeling software, the study measured HU’s operational, wage, capital, student, and visitor spending, along with the ripple effects those expenditures have throughout the regional and state economies.
According to the study, Harrisburg University’s direct employment and purchasing activities generate robust direct and indirect economic activity across Pennsylvania. This includes job creation – not only on campus but also in industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality, healthcare, retail, and construction – that support the needs of major employers and innovators based here in the Commonwealth.
In addition to job creation, the university’s economic activity is estimated to generate approximately $22 million annually in tax revenues for state and local governments, including sales tax, property tax, personal income tax, and corporate income tax.
“There’s no question that Pennsylvania’s independent, nonprofit colleges and universities serve as vital economic drivers for their communities and help fuel the economic vitality of the Commonwealth,” said Nichole Parker, Managing Principal of Parker Strategy Group.
David A. Schankweiler, Interim President at Harrisburg University, added: “This study is just the latest confirmation of what we’ve believed since our founding: that education is not only a pathway for individual opportunity, but also a powerful engine for economic growth. We don’t just teach theory; we empower inventors, entrepreneurs, scientists, and anyone else who has what it takes to make Pennsylvania more productive, profitable, and competitive. As an institution of higher learning with deep ties to industry, our mission extends beyond the classroom – we’re proud to help drive innovation, investment, and prosperity throughout Pennsylvania.”
Harrisburg University, founded in 2001, continues to grow its regional and national footprint through high-demand STEM degree programs and through a commitment to access, affordability, and workforce development. HU’s 2025 Commencement Exercises marked the conclusion of the university’s 20th Academic Year. The most recent additions to HU’s program catalog include an online Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity Operations & Management, a hybrid Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, and an Entertainment Technology Certificate for continuing learners.
